Resolution Revamp

If you have been following us, you know that we are big believers in setting goals for ourselves. Personally, we find monthly goals work best for us as they give us time to grow, yet aren’t too long so we end up losing sight of the priority of them. That being said, I like to mix things up to stay fresh!

At times, I struggle with having an all or nothing mentality. This can work against me when I am trying to develop a new habit or break an old one because if I miss a day or slip just a little I am tempted to throw in the towel.

This month I decided to look at my goal setting in a different way. I knew that with the fresh start of a new year I wanted to focus on healthy habits. I made a list of the habits I wanted to improve on and instead of saying “I want to read 30 minutes three times a week” or “I will walk on the treadmill before work every morning”. I simply decided to track what habits I was able to hit through the month.

At first, I thought I would use this information as a benchmark for increasing consistency next month. What I actually found was that I have been more successful and more consistent over the month as a whole without having the self inflicted pressure of ‘perfection’! I also liked seeing my progression throughout the month as I was able to create streaks of consistency!

Below is a picture of how and what I tracked. I had a few “easy” habits to get my positive mindset started. For example, taking my vitamins is something I am already consistent at so why not celebrate it. Other habits I knew I wouldn’t fulfill daily, but maybe once a week or so, like meditate (more like give myself 10 minutes of silence, though the Oak app is a great tool) I would have fret if I had missed a week. If you look, I did miss a week, yet I am still ending the month with completing the task four times!

Does anyone else do something similar? I am curious how this method will translate to other goals I have in the coming months or suggestions from what works for you!
