Date Night

If you read last week’s blog, you will know that one goal Jenna set this year was to bring back Date Night. One night a month we plan a special meal to make and enjoy together. The purpose is to take the time to more genuinely be in the moment, enjoy uninterrupted and more meaningful conversation, and to (in the words of Little Orphan Annie) gussy it up and look nice for each other!

We had our first date night this week and it was truly wonderful. Jenna came up with the idea to have a meal set up like a meal you would have at a hot pot or a hibachi restaurant. She also ordered this neat rice paper holder and water bowl that worked really well. It doesn’t waste as much water as when we used to fill a huge bowl to fit the big wrappers in and it also kept the water warmer so you could make one spring roll at a time without feeling rushed.

The idea was to be able to mix and match picking your own spring roll fillings, cooking them on the griddle, and sit and enjoy each roll. It was amazing!

Here is what we had available:

Main fillers:
Seasoned Rice
Tofu
Chinese Rib flavored Tempeh
Veggie fillers:
Spinach
Tomato
Avocado
Bell Pepper
Mushrooms
Pickled Onion
Toppings:
Green Onion
Cilantro
Lemongrass
Dipping Sauces:
Tamari
Gochujang
Teriyaki
Sweet Chili Sauce

We had our griddle out so we could heat up any fillers we wanted and extras dipping saucers to mix and match dipping flavors. It was so fun!

You might be thinking “that it was a lot of dishes”. While it was in a way, we will also be using all these items in lunches throughout the week. Also most of our dishes have their own cover so we were able to tuck them in the fridge and will eat out of them over the next few days as we pack lunches so we won’t have to do them all at the same time!

Once we took pictures to share but then the phones were put away to enjoy each other’s company. We highly recommend taking a meal to be disconnected with the world and just be connected with the people that mean the most to you. We also highly recommend a hot pot style meal! Let us know if you would try something like this!
